Qatar and Switzerland played out a 1–1 draw in the second Group B match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at San Francisco Stadium.
Switzerland made a bright start and took the lead in the 17th minute when Breel Embolo converted from the penalty spot. The decision proved controversial, however, as there appeared to be an offside infringement in the buildup before the penalty was awarded. Qatar, who spent much of the first half on the defensive, struggled to create chances and went into the break trailing by a single goal.
Although Qatar needed a response in the second half, it was Switzerland who continued to create the better opportunities and looked more likely to score again. The Swiss were unable to capitalize on their chances, though, and left the door open for a late comeback.
The equalizer finally arrived in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Boualem Khoukhi rose highest inside the penalty area to head home and rescue a point for Qatar.
With Canada and Bosnia also drawing in the other Group B fixture, all four teams now have one point in the standings.
