Scaloni agrees to lead Argentina until 2030 World Cup

Lionel Scaloni has agreed to extend his contract as Argentina head coach until 2030, ending speculation over his future and paving the way for him to lead the team into a new era.

Lionel Scaloni has agreed to extend his contract as Argentina’s head coach until the end of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, putting an end to speculation over his future.

The agreement with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) will see Scaloni remain in charge beyond December 2026, when his previous contract was due to expire.

The decision represents a major boost for Argentina, ensuring continuity under the manager who guided the national team to World Cup glory in 2022, ending the country’s 36-year wait for football’s most prestigious trophy.

Scaloni also led Argentina to the final of the 2026 World Cup, where they suffered defeat against Spain.

His future had been the subject of growing uncertainty in recent weeks, with questions emerging over whether he would continue after years of intense pressure and the high expectations associated with managing one of international football’s most successful teams.

Lionel Messi’s retirement from international football had also fuelled doubts about Scaloni’s willingness to oversee Argentina’s transition into a new generation.

However, the new agreement means Scaloni will have the opportunity to lead that transition, maintain Argentina’s competitiveness and prepare the team for the 2030 World Cup.

Since taking charge in 2018, Scaloni has established Argentina as one of the dominant forces in international football, winning the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
