Iran opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
New Zealand took the lead in the 7th minute through Elia Wood before Ramin Rezaeian equalized for Iran in the 33rd minute.

Elia Wood scored his second goal of the match in the 54th minute to restore New Zealand’s advantage, but Mohammad Mohebi responded ten minutes later, heading home Iran’s second goal in the 64th minute.
The match finished 2-2, with both teams earning a point in Group G.
