In a Group J fixture of the FIFA World Cup 2026, held at the San Francisco Stadium, Austria national football team secured a 3–1 victory over Jordan national football team, one of the tournament’s debutant sides.
Austria took the lead in the 20th minute through Romano Schmid, giving them a narrow advantage at halftime. Jordan responded after the break when Ali Olwan equalised in the 50th minute, briefly raising hopes of a positive result.
The match remained tense as Marco Arnautović found the net in the 67th minute, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review due to a foul in the buildup. Austria eventually regained control when they were awarded an own goal by Yazan Abu Al Arab in the 76th minute, restoring their lead.
In stoppage time, VAR intervened again, this time awarding a penalty to Austria. Arnautović converted from the spot in the 90+12th minute, sealing a late and decisive victory.
With this result, Austria moved into second place in Group J behind Argentina national football team, while Jordan and Algeria national football team occupied the lower positions in the group standings.
