Australia sharper than expected as Turkiye suffer surprise setback

Australia secured a 2-0 victory over Turkey in their Group D encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe earning the Socceroos a valuable three points in Vancouver.

In a Group D match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Australia defeated Türkiye 2–0 at Vancouver Stadium.

The Socceroos broke the deadlock in the 27th minute when Nestory Irankunda produced a brilliant individual move before finding the back of the net. Türkiye created several opportunities to respond before halftime but failed to convert their chances.

After the break, Türkiye head coach Vincenzo Montella made a number of substitutions, notably introducing Kenan Yıldız in an attempt to turn the game around. The Turkish side enjoyed more possession and controlled much of the second half, showing a significant improvement compared to their first-half performance.

However, against the run of play, Australia doubled their advantage in the 75th minute when Connor Metcalfe scored with a low-driven shot to seal the victory.

Following this result, Türkiye now face a difficult task in their remaining Group D fixtures against Paraguay and the United States.
