Manchester United have officially announced that Michael Carrick will remain as the club’s permanent head coach.
The Red Devils confirmed that Carrick has signed a new contract running until 2028 after an impressive spell in charge since returning to Old Trafford in January.
Carrick enjoyed a dream start to life on the United bench, leading the team to victories over Manchester City and Arsenal in his opening two Premier League matches, while also earning the Premier League Manager of the Month award.
Under the former midfielder, United secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, recording 11 wins in 16 matches and collecting more Premier League points than any other side during that period.
Carrick is already regarded as one of Manchester United’s modern legends following a trophy-laden playing career at the club, where he made 464 appearances and won five Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Europa League, two League Cups and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Speaking after the announcement, Carrick said:
“From the moment that I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United. Carrying the responsibility of leading this special football club fills me with immense pride.
“Now it’s time to move forward together again, with ambition and a clear sense of purpose. Manchester United and our incredible supporters deserve to be challenging for the biggest honours again.”
Manchester United director of football Jason Wilcox also praised the manager’s impact, stating that Carrick had fully earned the opportunity to continue leading the team after restoring strong performances, unity within the squad and Champions League qualification.
