U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to attend the FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain at MetLife Stadium in New York–New Jersey on Sunday, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Leavitt said the president is looking forward to watching the championship match in person.
She described the tournament as the most widely viewed, secure, and successful World Cup ever hosted in the United States, adding that Trump's presence at the final would mark the culmination of the event.
When asked whether the president would be supporting either finalist, Leavitt said she was unsure and suggested reporters ask Trump directly, saying he would likely have an entertaining response.
Leavitt also announced that Trump is scheduled to attend a FIFA reception at Trump Tower in New York City on Friday ahead of Sunday's final.
