Chelsea have officially completed the signing of Emiliano Martínez from Aston Villa, with the Argentina international joining the Blues on a three-year contract.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper arrives at Stamford Bridge with an impressive collection of major honours, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup, two Copa América titles and the Yashin Trophy, which he won at the 2023 and 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremonies.
Martínez said he was delighted to join Chelsea and described the move as an easy decision for himself and his family.
“I want to be successful here. I'm someone who wants to win at everything I do and I want to bring that here to this football club,” Martínez said. “It’s a football club that wins titles, so I think it’s a good match.”
The Argentine began his career in Independiente’s youth system before moving to Arsenal in 2010 at the age of 17. After a series of loan spells, he established himself as Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper towards the end of the 2019/20 season, starting the club’s final 11 matches and helping them win the FA Cup.
He also lifted the Community Shield before leaving Arsenal for Aston Villa in September 2020.
Martínez went on to become one of the Premier League’s leading goalkeepers during his six seasons at Villa. He made 256 appearances for the club and helped them win the UEFA Europa League in May.
At international level, Martínez made his Argentina debut in June 2021 and has since become the national team’s first-choice goalkeeper, earning 67 caps. He played a key role in Argentina’s Copa América triumphs in 2021 and 2024 before helping La Albiceleste win the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.
Now a Chelsea player, Martínez will look to bring his experience, competitive mentality and winning pedigree to the Blues as he begins a new chapter at Stamford Bridge.
