It’s been well over 18 months since Sergio Ramos played his last competitive football match as his time with Liga MX side Monterrey came to a conclusion in December 2025.
Despite many feeling that the Seville native would call time on his glittering career, Ramos maintained that he was still interested in pursuing a life in the game feeling that he had still much to offer as a veteran defender.
He was part of a consortium that came close to taking control of Sevilla FC and despite being out of the limelight has maintained a tight fitness regime with the 40-year-old using his Instagram to showcase his training regimes.
Ramos’ return to action on the pitch may be getting closer however with the player reportedly in discussions to join Premier League side Aston Villa.
Unai Emery’s side is scrambling for immediate defensive reinforcements following injuries to Pau Torres and Ian Maatsen during their match against Nottingham Forest and the club’s sporting director Monchi (who knows the Camas native from his time at Sevilla FC) has suggested that Ramos could act as cover with Villa also involved in the UEFA Champions League.
At the moment a potential move is speculative and there has been no confirmation on the move from the player or the club but given that the defender is still a free agent, he could be signed outside of the standard transfer window framework, provided Villa has an open squad slot.
