Following Portugal’s elimination against Spain in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Martínez confirmed his departure in the post-match press conference.
The Portuguese coach said: “This was my last match with the national team. I thank the people of Portugal. I will take with me a memory that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
Martínez took charge of Portugal in January 2023, replacing Fernando Santos. During his time in charge, Portugal recorded 30 wins, 9 draws and 6 defeats in 45 matches.
His biggest achievement with the national team came in 2025, when he guided Portugal to the UEFA Nations League title.
After more than three years, the Roberto Martínez era in Portugal has come to an end, and the Portuguese Football Federation will now begin the search for a new head coach.
