Dallas Stadium hosted one of the most thrilling matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Spain defeated Portugal 1–0 in a dramatic Iberian derby to secure their place in the next round.
The game began cautiously before Spain created the first major opportunity in the eighth minute. Mikel Oyarzabal failed to convert Dani Olmo's excellent through ball, sending his one-on-one effort wide of the target. Portugal responded four minutes later when Cristiano Ronaldo tested Unai Simón from a tight angle, but the Spanish goalkeeper made a comfortable save.
Spain continued to threaten, with Lamine Yamal forcing an impressive stop from Diogo Costa in the 16th minute. In the 31st minute, after Costa parried away a dangerous cross, Dani Olmo headed the rebound wide despite being in a promising position.
Portugal came close in the 37th minute as Unai Simón produced two outstanding saves in quick succession, first denying João Félix's header before keeping out Ronaldo's follow-up effort. Shortly before halftime, Nuno Mendes struck a powerful shot that deflected off a Spanish defender and crashed against the post, with fortune favoring La Roja as the ball stayed out. Despite several clear chances at both ends, the first half ended goalless.

The second half was more cautious, with fewer opportunities. Lamine Yamal's free-kick in the 73rd minute was comfortably handled by Diogo Costa, and as the match approached full time, extra time appeared inevitable.
However, Spain found a dramatic winner deep into stoppage time. In the first minute of added time, substitute Fran Torres delivered a precise pass to fellow substitute Mikel Merino, who calmly finished past Costa to seal a 1–0 victory for La Roja.
Portugal had little time to respond. Their final chance came through Bernardo Silva, whose late header drifted narrowly over the crossbar. The defeat brought Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal's 2026 World Cup campaign to an end.

Spain will now face the winner of the United States vs. Belgium match in the quarter-finals. The fixture is scheduled for Friday at Los Angeles Stadium.
