Bayern Munich put together a dominant Champions League performance, cruising to a 5-0 victory over FK Bodø/Glimt at the Allianz Arena. While the final scoreline suggested a comfortable night from start to finish, Vincent Kompany saw things a little differently.
The Bayern Munich boss felt the opening 45 minutes required patience from his team, drawing a comparison to the recent match against Schalke 04. Bayern controlled much of the game but did not consistently create the kind of clear-cut opportunities that would have allowed it to pull away early.
Kompany was pleased that his players remained composed, however, and believed there were still enough moments in the first half where Bayern could have found the breakthrough.
"The first half was a bit similar to Schalke. We had to stay patient. We didn't have many chances, but still had moments where we could've scored a couple of goals. In the second half, we scored at the right moment and then got the goals. Deserved win," Kompany said.
That patience ultimately paid off in a big way. Once Bayern Munich found the breakthrough after halftime, the floodgates opened, with the reigning Bundesliga champions adding four more goals to turn a competitive opening period into a rout.
For Kompany, that ability to stay patient and then capitalize when the opportunity arrives is an encouraging sign for Bayern Munich. Not every Champions League match will be decided in the opening 20 minutes, and the Bavarians showed they can continue executing their plan even when the goals are not immediately coming.
The 5-0 result also gives Bayern Munich another emphatic European victory and plenty of momentum as the Champions League campaign continues. Up next, another very winnable game vs. Viking.
