Gianni Infantino could have been in line to earn a staggering salary comparable with the likes of Erling Haaland, Lewis Hamilton and Steph Curry had his dastardly plan to sell off a chunk of the World Cup succeeded.
The unpopular FIFA president plunged world football into chaos earlier this week with his plan to create a new subsidiary, the Fifa Forward Enterprise.
Had the plan been given the green light, the Fifa Forward Enterprise would have been in charge of Fifa’s money-making channels for its biggest events, including the World Cup.
Infantino, 56, had planned to flog a 20 per cent stake in the new sister company to private investors for a mooted $4.2 million (£3.1m).
The plan was scrapped, however, after Uefa nations including England threatened to BOYCOTT the World Cup.
Infantino earns a salary of around £2.6m as Fifa president, although this figure was thought to have roughly doubled last year following bonuses.
A new role as commissioner of the Fifa Forward Enterprise would likely have banked the Swiss former lawyer a much bigger sum.
It is expected that Infantino would have moved into the position following the end of his final term as Fifa president in 2031.
According to The Times, the role was expected to land a similar salary to that of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who pockets around $64m (£47m) per year.
This eye-watering sum would have brought Infantino in line with some of sport’s biggest superstars.
Per Capology, Manchester City superstar Haaland earns around £45.5m per year if he achieves the bonuses laid out in his contract.
And according to Spotrac, Ferrari icon Hamilton is paid $60m (£44.5m) by the Formula 1 powerhouse.
Curry, meanwhile, is set to pocket $62,587,158 (£46.3m) from the Golden State Warriors in the upcoming season.
Patrick Mahomes‘ contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs will see him take home $64m (£47m) a year from 2027.
In the wake of his plan collapsing, Infantino is facing a Fifa revolt.
The Fifa president is likely to be asked to step down at a council meeting after he finally bowed to pressure and axed his lucrative project.
