A historic night for England as they beat Mexico 3-2 in their World Cup last-16 tie was soured by an injury suffered by Jordan Henderson from falling over an advertising board in the post-match celebrations. The former Liverpool captain, who was an unused substitute, has been taken to hospital with a wrist injury that puts his participation in the rest of the tournament at risk.
Shortly after the full-time whistle, as England’s players went to celebrate in front of their fans, medical staff were seen rushing to the vicinity. Henderson was given oxygen and carried off on a stretcher.
Jude Bellingham told the BBC: “He’s in a bit of bother but our medical team have got everything under control probably. Best not to give too much detail when I don’t know too much what is going on. Everyone was there to support him and even that was a beautiful thing to see.”
Thomas Tuchel, the England head coach, said later: “Jordan injured his wrist, it just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is not with us. I don’t know the procedure, the doctor told me he is in the hospital.”
Henderson had been booked during a fractious game over a confrontation on the sidelines. His sole appearance in the tournament came as an 84th-minute substitute against Panama.
England beat Mexico with two goals from Bellingham and a penalty from Harry Kane, hanging on to win after Jarell Quansah had been sent off for catching Jesús Gallardoan with his studs early in the second half.
