Arsenal claimed a crucial 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield in the standout fixture of Matchweek 9 of the Premier League, ending their long wait for a win at the Merseyside club’s home ground.
The Gunners were aiming to end a 14-year winless run at Anfield, having recorded eight defeats and five draws in their previous 13 visits. Mikel Arteta’s side also had their sights set on the top of the Premier League table, hoping to overtake Manchester City.
The opening stages were evenly contested, but Arsenal took the lead in the 16th minute. Declan Rice delivered an excellent pass that exposed Liverpool’s defensive lapse, allowing Kai Havertz to find the back of the net and put the visitors ahead.
Liverpool pushed hard for an equaliser, with Alexander Isak and Alexis Mac Allister both coming close, but the hosts failed to convert their opportunities and went into the break trailing 1-0.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Arsenal maintaining a disciplined defensive structure and limiting Liverpool’s attacking opportunities. Dominik Szoboszlai, having recovered from injury, was introduced in the 59th minute as Liverpool searched for a breakthrough.
Meanwhile, Arsenal looked to extend their advantage and put the result beyond doubt. The best opportunity of the second half fell to Christos Tzolis in the 73rd minute, but Alisson Becker produced an excellent save to turn his effort behind for a corner.
Liverpool continued to apply pressure in the closing stages, but their efforts proved unsuccessful as Arsenal held firm to secure all three points. The defeat also marked Liverpool’s first home loss in 13 matches.
The victory lifted Arsenal to the top of the Premier League table with 24 points, while Liverpool remained in fifth place with 15 points.
