Barcelona eye Lisandro Martinez as Alejandro Balde emerges as potential January exit

Barcelona are reportedly considering a move for Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez, with Alejandro Balde potentially sold to make room for the Argentine.

Barcelona have been linked with a swoop for Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez.

And the Catalan giants could flog rumoured United target Alejandro Balde in order to clear space for a new defender.

Barca boss Hansi Flick has had to contend with injuries to the likes of Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde, Eric Garcia and Xavi Espart.

On potential mid-season reinforcements, the German, 61, said on Friday: “We always look for what’s best for the team. And we’re doing that.

“We’ll see, there are still a few weeks until the winter transfer window opens. If we can do something, maybe we will.”

Barca were last week linked with Red Devils centre-back Martinez.

The Argentine, 28, has endured a tough season at Old Trafford, on and off the pitch.

Martinez was fined by United chiefs after blasting the club’s board following a 2-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid last month.

He has also been well below par on the pitch, and was yesterday sent off as his side lost 2-0 at Chelsea.

Martinez’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, although United do possess an option to extend it by a further 12 months.

His contract status, has attracted interest from Barcelona.

Due to strict LaLiga financial rules, Barca would have to sell someone in order to bring in Martinez, or any other new recruit, in January.

According to Spanish outlet Marca, Balde is the most likely candidate.

The full-back was linked with Man Utd over the summer but wanted to stay and fight for his place at Barcelona.

Despite a catalogue of defensive injuries, boss Flick has been reluctant to use Balde.

The left-sided defender has made just three league appearances this term and has not started a single match in any competition.

In Saturday’s 6-1 thumping of Deportivo Alaves, Flick opted to hand academy midfielder Brian Farinas a senior debut at full-back, rather than Balde.

Left-back has been a problem position for United.

With Luke Shaw having suffered numerous injury woes, Diogo Dalot has often been forced to fill in out of position.

Balde, 23, has made 172 senior appearances for Barca – laying on an impressive 21 assists.

He has won three LaLiga titles and a Cope del Rey with his boyhood club – in addition to being named in the Spanish top flight’s team of the season.

Balde has also earned seven Spain caps, although he missed out on their victorious World Cup squad last summer.
