Canada captain Alphonso Davies made history at the FIFA World Cup 2026 by becoming the 1,000th player ever to appear in the tournament during Canada’s Round of 32 match against South Africa.
Davies came off the bench in the second half, as the co-hosts secured a 1–0 win to advance to the Round of 16. FIFA later confirmed the milestone in the expanded 48-team competition.
Head coach Jesse Marsch had declared Davies fit after his recovery from a hamstring injury.
Canada will next face the winner of the Netherlands vs Morocco match in Houston.
Despite the defeat, South Africa exited the tournament with pride after reaching the knockout stage for the first time in their history.
