Xavi Hernández admitted that the Netherlands still have room for improvement after securing their first win under his management with a 2–1 victory over Serbia in Belgrade.
Speaking after the match, Xavi was pleased with the result but acknowledged that his team did not perform at the level he expects.
“I have to be honest: we have to play better. But there were also good things, and I’m happy with the attitude and the effort we showed.”
The Netherlands struggled to find space against a compact Serbian defence, particularly during the first half. According to Xavi, his side improved after the break by taking greater control of the game and maintaining their positions more effectively.
“In the second half, we started to dominate more and create chances. We kept our positions better, and that allowed us to attack the spaces in their defence more effectively.”
Xavi also highlighted the difficulty of playing against a team that defended deep and with little space between the lines. For the Dutch coach, improving their movement and understanding of when to attack space will be an important part of the team's development.
The standout performer was Mexx Meerdink, who scored both of the Netherlands’ goals on his first international start.
Xavi was particularly pleased with Meerdink's contribution beyond his goals.
“I’m very happy for Mexx. Not only because he scored, but also because he works very hard. He is the player who starts our high pressing, and that makes him extremely important for the team.”
The victory gives the Netherlands four points from their first two Nations League matches under Xavi, following Thursday’s 1–1 draw with Germany.
For Xavi, however, the focus remains on developing the team and implementing his footballing ideas rather than simply collecting results.
“We need time, but I’m satisfied with what I’ve seen.”
