The 2026 World Cup will be the biggest in the tournament’s history – and there will be some big rule changes too.
A mammoth 48 teams will compete in the blockbuster summer showpiece across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The entire globe will be watching the 39-day festival of football in North America and it’s important you know all the rules.
How many yellow cards before players are suspended and when do they reset?
Fifa have tweaked the rules around suspensions for accumulated yellow cards at this summer’s World Cup.
World football’s governing body made the decision to wipe all yellow cards at the end of the group stage and the quarter-finals.
Previously, a team would play five matches to reach the last eight and any player who received two yellow cards in those games would pick up a suspension.
Two bookings will remain the suspension threshold, but due to a change in the rules, there will only be two small windows for players to accumulate enough yellows for a ban.
Players would have to be cautioned in two of three group stage games or in two of the last-32, last-16 and the quarter-finals, to receive a one-match suspension.
Fifa felt it would be fairer to add the additional cut-off point as the expanded field means there is an extra round for teams to contest.
It was feared that, under the original rules, more players would be on the edge of suspension after playing six fixtures in the lead-up to the last eight and could miss a semi-final.
