Gianni Infantino is increasingly confident of retaining his position as FIFA president ahead of next March’s election, with potential challengers yet to emerge as serious contenders.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has confirmed he will seek another term, while European Club Association chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi has ruled himself out of the race for FIFA’s top job.
According to The Times, Infantino’s opponents are still hoping a credible challenger will step forward before the November 18 nomination deadline.
Despite a series of scandals and ethics complaints surrounding his presidency, Infantino remains determined to fight for another term.
CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani is not expected to challenge him, while former candidate Prince Ali bin Al Hussein, who ran against Infantino in 2015, has emerged as another possible name. However, it remains unclear whether he would consider a second bid.
Meanwhile, efforts are reportedly underway to identify an alternative challenger, with former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger among the names being discussed.
Wenger, who currently oversees football development at FIFA, commands considerable respect across the global game, potentially making him an intriguing candidate in the race for the presidency.
