Valencia CF have announced an agreement with Javier Aguirre to become the club’s new first-team head coach.
The Mexican coach has signed a contract until the end of the current season, with Valencia holding an option to extend his deal for an additional campaign.
Aguirre joins Valencia after leading the Mexico national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Mexico reached the Round of 16. It was his third appearance as Mexico head coach at the World Cup, following his spells at the 2002 Korea and Japan and 2010 South Africa tournaments.
The 67-year-old has enjoyed an extensive coaching career, managing several LaLiga clubs including CA Osasuna, Atlético de Madrid, Real Zaragoza, RCD Espanyol, CD Leganés and RCD Mallorca. He has also gained international experience with clubs and national teams in Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Mexico.
One of Aguirre’s notable achievements in Spain came with Osasuna, whom he guided to UEFA Champions League qualification.
At international level, he has won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2009 and 2025, as well as the 2024-25 CONCACAF Nations League, with Mexico. In club football, he won the Liga MX title with Pachuca in 1999 and the CONCACAF Champions League with CF Monterrey in 2021.
Aguirre will be officially presented to the media as Valencia’s new head coach on Monday, September 28, at the press room of Mestalla Stadium.
