Seattle hosted the United States' second match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a Group D clash against Australia that ended in a 2–0 victory for the hosts.
The United States made a strong start and quickly turned their early pressure into a goal. In the 11th minute, Cameron Burgess inadvertently turned Folarin Balogun’s cross into his own net, giving the hosts an early lead. Mauricio Pochettino’s side, which has enjoyed an impressive start to the tournament, controlled possession and dictated play for much of the first half.

The Americans thought they had doubled their advantage in the 43rd minute through Alex Freeman. Although the goal was initially ruled out for offside, a VAR review confirmed its legitimacy, and German referee Felix Zwayer awarded the goal.
Australia showed greater attacking intent after the break and attempted to fight their way back into the contest. However, the United States remained composed and well organized, maintaining control of the game. The hosts also withstood a series of late Australian attacks to preserve their advantage.
With the victory, the United States moved onto six points and became the second host nation, after Mexico, to secure qualification for the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
