Todd Boehly is on the brink of a Chelsea exit after agreeing to sell his shares.
The American and colleagues Mark Walter and Hansjorg Wyss are set to flog their 38.5 per cent share in the club to Clearlake Capital for a small profit.
This will see Behdad Eghbali’s Clearlake increase their stake in the club from 61.5 per cent to 99.9 per cent.
According to the Telegraph, a deal between the parties is nearing full completion.
Boehly, 52, was the face of Chelsea‘s takeover in 2022 and initially worked as interim sporting director.
He has taken more of a back seat in recent years, with Eghbali doing more of the day-to-day work.
The terms of the initial takeover dictated that consortium members could only sell shares to each other during the first 10 years of their ownership in the club.
Talks began in 2024 regarding Boehly or Eghbali buying each other out, with relations between the pair having grown increasingly strained.
With his business partner Walter wishing to depart, it is Boehly that is set to leave Stamford Bridge.
A Walter spokesperson told Bloomberg: “This potential transaction values Mark Walter’s stake in Chelsea Football Club at a premium to his initial investment and is another successful sports investment for him.
“After this exit, Mr Walter intends to make future sports-related investments.”
The 2022 takeover of Chelsea cost the consortium £2.5bn – with another £1.75bn promised in investment into the club.
It remains to be seen what Boehly, Walter and Wyss will pocket for their individual shares, which total 12.83 per cent each.
Full control will now be in the hands of Eghbali and his business partner Jose E Feliciano.
Despite his imminent exit, Boehly has still been attending Chelsea matches.
The American was at the Emirates last week as his side lost 2-1 at Arsenal.
Boehly owns MLB franchise the Los Angeles Dodgers and also has a stake in WNBA side the Los Angeles Sparks alongside Walter.
Walter, 66, is being investigated by the US attorney’s office over alleged financial misdealing.
In August he flipped the Los Angeles Lakers in a £9.2bn deal – just 10 months after buying the premium NBA franchise from the Buss family.
