Vinicius is still in the eye of the storm in Brazil. Although he had a good game against Croatia, providing a great assist in the 3–1 victory, many are still questioning his leadership in the national team.
Some critics also do not understand why coach Carlo Ancelotti does not call up Neymar, a decision they say harms Vinicius, as he does not perform at the same level for Brazil as Neymar currently does.
That comparison with Neymar is very damaging to Vinicius. The Real Madrid player is accused of not performing as well for the national team as he does for his club.
Former Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano said: “As for Vini, I think the problem is more the player himself. He already had his chances with different coaches like Dorival and Diniz. He had many opportunities under Tite as well, and so far, nothing. He has never come close to being what he is at Real Madrid.”
Another former Brazilian player, Fabio Luciano, was even more critical: “Vini's issue is first of all tactical. The national team does not manage to put him in the same situations he has at Real Madrid, like one-on-one duels. When he gets the ball, there are too many defenders around him.”
Luciano also suggested there is a mental aspect linked to Neymar’s absence:
“When Neymar is not there, Vini feels he has to be Neymar. That’s too much responsibility. He needs to take that weight off his shoulders. The team should help him. You are not Neymar. You’re not going to solve everything alone.”
Harsh criticism
Luciano went even further: “Vini is not Neymar. He should not take on that leadership role. It is unimaginable that he wears the number 10 for Brazil. We will always compare him. If Neymar is not there, how can this be? This guy cannot wear the 10. He is not a number 10, he is a winger.”
