Atlanta Stadium in Georgia hosted Spain’s opening match of the 2026 World Cup against Cape Verde, a Group H encounter that delivered the first major surprise of the tournament and ended in a goalless draw.
While many had expected relentless attacking football and a dominant display from Spain, Cape Verde’s well-organised defence denied La Roja much space to create clear chances. By the latter stages of the first half, Luis de la Fuente’s side were consistently edging closer to the “Blue Sharks”’ goal, and in the 39th minute, Ferran Torres rattled the crossbar. Moments before the break, Torres tested again, only to be denied by a superb save from 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha. The veteran then produced another crucial intervention, tipping a header from Aymeric Laporte behind for a corner.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Spain launching wave after wave of pressure in search of a breakthrough. Lamine Yamal was introduced in the 72nd minute, returning from injury to add creativity and spark to La Roja’s attack. Yet even when Spain managed to breach the defensive lines, Vozinha repeatedly stood firm, producing save after save to frustrate the Spanish forwards.
In the end, the match finished level, a result that will delight Uruguay and Saudi Arabia—Spain’s group rivals—as the tournament’s first real shock unfolded in Atlanta.
