Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish has revealed that he is currently undergoing treatment for cancer.
The 75-year-old shared the news in a statement posted on social media, assuring supporters that his treatment is progressing positively.
“As my inadvertent social media post has indicated, I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well,” Dalglish said.
He explained that he had hoped to keep the matter private but was forced to address it publicly after accidentally revealing the information online.
“Ideally, this would have remained private because that's the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand. I did not mean to make this matter public, so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself is respected,” he added.
Dalglish also expressed his gratitude to the medical staff caring for him.
“As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others. They are a credit to themselves.”
His son, Paul Dalglish, responded to the statement with a heartfelt message, writing: “Love you, Dad.”
Liverpool FC later issued its own statement, pledging support for one of the club’s greatest figures.
“The support, best wishes and love of everyone at Liverpool FC are, and will be, with Sir Kenny and his family. The club would also like to underscore his request for privacy moving forward,” the club said.
Dalglish remains one of the most iconic figures in Liverpool’s history. Between 1977 and 1990, he made 515 appearances and scored 172 goals for the Reds after arriving from Celtic as Kevin Keegan’s replacement.
During his time at Anfield, he helped Liverpool win six league titles, four League Cups and one FA Cup. He also served as player-manager from 1985 to 1990 and returned for a second spell as manager during the 2011-12 season.
Now serving as a club ambassador, Dalglish continues to maintain a close connection with Liverpool and its supporters.
