Sadio Mané has officially announced his retirement from international football following Senegal’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 34-year-old brings the curtain down on a remarkable Senegal career that began in 2012, finishing with 130 appearances, 54 goals and 29 assists.
Mané played a key role in the nation’s greatest successes, helping Senegal win their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title in 2021 by defeating Egypt on penalties. He also lifted a second AFCON trophy in 2025, although the title was later awarded to Morocco after CAF overturned the final result.
Senegal’s 2026 World Cup campaign ended in disappointment. After defeats to France and Norway, the Lions of Teranga advanced as one of the best third-placed teams with a win over Iraq before suffering a dramatic 3-2 extra-time loss to Belgium in the round of 16.
The tournament was also marked by off-field issues, including reports of unpaid player bonuses, poor accommodation, uncertainty over head coach Pape Thiaw’s contract, and claims the squad was left stranded in Seattle after elimination.
Despite the difficult ending, Mané departs as one of the greatest players in Senegal’s history and said he hopes to continue serving the national team in a different capacity.
