Real Madrid made a major splash in the transfer market this summer, signing several high-profile players, including Yan Diomande, Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konate.
However, one notable name was missing from that list: Rodri.
The former Manchester City midfielder had been widely expected to make the move to the Santiago Bernabeu following a successful World Cup campaign. But a late change of heart saw Rodri opt for a move to arch-rivals Barcelona, a decision that was always likely to generate plenty of controversy.
Now, one month into the new season, Rodri has finally opened up about the summer transfer saga, which saw Real Madrid and Barcelona battle for his signature.
Speaking to COPE, the midfielder admitted that Real Madrid were determined to sign him and made a huge effort to convince him to move to the Spanish capital.
"Real Madrid really tried hard. They wanted to sign me, we had direct talks and they came with everything they had to make it happen," he told COPE.
In the end, however, their efforts were not enough to change Rodri's mind, as the midfielder chose to join a Barcelona side featuring several Spanish players he already knew from the national team.
Rodri remains grateful for Real Madrid's interest, although he was unwilling to reveal any details about his reported meeting with club president Florentino Perez.
"They made my decision difficult. I am grateful. Speaking with Florentino Pérez too? I am not gonna say that," he added.
Despite Real Madrid's multiple signings this summer, missing out on Rodri could prove to be a significant blow for the club, particularly given the weaknesses that have emerged in midfield.
Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham have both performed well, but Real Madrid have lacked the calmness and stability required in the middle of the pitch. Meanwhile, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga have struggled to make a consistent impact.
The team has also been slow when transitioning the ball from defence into midfield and, collectively, has struggled to maintain the required intensity. Real Madrid currently rank last in La Liga for ground covered.
A player of Rodri's profile could have helped address several of those issues. Instead, Jose Mourinho now has another problem to deal with, with Valverde suffering a fresh injury that could keep him out for several weeks.
