Real Madrid suffered their first defeat of the season against Real Betis. A late goal from Parrott gave Pellegrini's side the victory. The Chilean coach has become Mourinho's first "executioner" in his second spell in charge of the Spanish giants. Mourinho himself analyzed the 1-0 defeat at La Cartuja in his post-match press conference.
Mourinho also addressed the controversial incidents, including the lack of a replay and the disallowed goal: "I haven't seen them in detail. I didn't see them in the dressing room. I can't comment on them."
Mourinho was also asked whether Espí deserved to play a bigger role: "I think the team played a great match. Sometimes you lose and you don't know how to explain it. We were very dominant. The centre-backs were imperious. We created a lot offensively. If the game had ended in a draw, we would have been frustrated. As for Espí, he scored a fantastic goal, and he is important for us. We've earned points thanks to his work, and he has done well. He will get better because he is humble and hardworking."
Mourinho explained why he decided to take Arda Güler off despite his strong performance: "It's difficult to take Arda off because he was playing very well. Betis' players are smarter than Madrid's players, who are pure. In the first play of the match, there was a clear yellow card for a player who hit Valverde, then another one, but we recovered quickly. They are smarter and, obviously, with the support of a fantastic crowd, they manage to do these kinds of things. I don't know how Arda finished the first half with a yellow card... I had to take him off because he was in a risky situation."
Mourinho explained that his substitutions were not made because he was unhappy with the team's performance: "The team was always good. I haven't seen the data, but we created a huge amount. We missed three or four clear chances and their goalkeeper made three or four impressive saves. I didn't make the changes because I wasn't happy; they were to take the players with yellow cards off the pitch. It's better to play with Trent and Diomande than with Dumfries."
Mourinho also gave his assessment of the referee's performance: "I don't know why I was shown a yellow card. I accept it. I stood up because a Betis player seemed as if he had died in front of the bench. I've seen a lot of people frustrated with the decisions, but I didn't see them and I can't comment. He allowed the game to flow, and that's something I like. After losing, to say now that it was because of a yellow card... I don't do that. I may change my opinion tomorrow, but today, based on the feelings from the bench, I don't know why we lost because collectively we played very well. I have nothing to reproach any player for in terms of their attitude. We deserved to win, but deserving to win doesn't give you points."
Mourinho also discussed the perception that the team was "innocent" and commented on Cucurella: "I'm very happy with my players. With all of them. Individually, I have nothing to reproach anyone for. The penalty... when one player goes to take it, we all go together. Cucurella has cramps."
