The match at Estadio Guadalajara marked the second appearance of one of the 2026 World Cup hosts, as the Mexico national football team faced the South Korea national football team and secured a valuable 1–0 win.
The first half was a balanced contest, often described as a battle for top position in Group A, ending goalless. The game maintained a good tempo, but clear chances were limited at both ends.
Mexico broke the deadlock early in the second half. In the 51st minute, a miscommunication between goalkeeper Kim Seung-Gyu and defender Lee Ki-Hyuk allowed Luis Romo to capitalize and score from close range. After taking the lead, Mexico managed the game intelligently, limiting South Korea’s ability to respond despite increased pressure.
South Korea’s best opportunity came in the 87th minute, when Raul Rangel produced a remarkable double save—first denying Cho Gue-Sung’s header, then reacting quickly to stop Yang Hyun-Jfollow-up effort.
With this result, Mexico advanced to the knockout stage.
