Lionel Messi has won almost every major honor football has to offer. Now, he is set to add a very different title to his name: Doctor.
The University of Buenos Aires has named the Argentina legend a Doctor Honoris Causa, the highest honorary distinction awarded by the institution.
The decision was unanimously approved by the university's Superior Council, which recognized Messi's excellence, perseverance, humility and commitment to representing Argentina.
Messi will officially receive the honorary doctorate on October 6, making an already emotional day even more significant.
Just hours later, the 39-year-old is expected to take the field at the Monumental for what could be his final appearance for Argentina.
Argentina will face Benin in a specially arranged farewell match, marking the expected end of Messi's international career after more than two decades.
Argentina Football Association president Claudio Tapia said the match was organized to give Messi “the farewell he truly deserves.” If selected, Messi will make his 208th appearance for his country.
His international career has included the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, and the 2022 Finalissima.
But the University of Buenos Aires says its recognition is about more than trophies and statistics.
University president Ricardo Gelpi described Messi as an example and ambassador of Argentina's popular culture and national identity, while praising his humility and perseverance.
And so, before Messi wears Argentina's iconic No. 10 shirt for what is expected to be the final time, he will have one more title to add to an extraordinary career.
