Argentine superstar Lionel Messi had a few words of advice for the young players taking part in the Messi Cup, encouraging them to enjoy the experience and make the most of the tournament. But he also found himself at the center of a hilarious moment during the opening ceremony.

Messi shared an amusing moment at the inauguration of the Messi Cup, a youth football tournament bringing together some of the game’s most promising young talents. The Inter Miami star addressed the players with a heartfelt speech, but he got so carried away that he completely forgot his words needed to be translated.

“I hope this will be an unforgettable tournament, one that stays with you for the rest of your lives. I hope you grow as players and people, and that you remember this tournament no matter what happens in your future careers. I hope you leave here with unforgettable memories,” Messi added.

Once he finished speaking, the Argentine legend suddenly realized he had gone on a little too long. His reaction sparked laughter among those in attendance.

“I forgot you had to translate! I made it way too long, didn’t I?” Messi joked.

What Is the Messi Cup?

The Messi Cup is an international under-16 youth football tournament launched in partnership with Lionel Messi. It brings together promising young players from the academies of clubs around the world.

The 2026 edition will be the tournament’s second installment and will take place in Miami, Florida, from October 25 to November 1. The competition will feature 16 teams from nine countries and a total of 48 matches—double the number of teams that competed in the inaugural 2025 edition.

Three Argentine clubs will be among the participants: Boca Juniors, River Plate, and Newell’s Old Boys.

For Boca Juniors, the tournament will mark a first-ever appearance. River Plate and Newell’s Old Boys, meanwhile, will return after competing in the inaugural edition.
