Harry Kane admitted England could have beaten Spain "on another day" after the Three Lions began their Nations League campaign with a 3-2 defeat to the world champions.
England initially fell behind after Marc Guehi's error allowed Lamine Yamal to score in the second minute. Anthony Gordon and Kane then turned the game around, scoring within four minutes of each other to put England ahead before half-time.
Kane later had the opportunity to extend England's lead from the penalty spot, but his standing foot slipped and his effort struck the crossbar. Spain took advantage soon afterwards, with Alex Baena equalising before Mikel Oyarzabal completed the comeback and secured all three points for the visitors.
The defeat was the first time England had lost a match after leading at half-time since June 2019, when they were beaten by the Netherlands in the Nations League. They had won 41 of their previous 42 matches when ahead at the break during that period.
Kane has scored 17 goals in 19 appearances for England under Thomas Tuchel. However, after scoring 39 of his 40 penalties for club and country across 2023, 2024 and 2025, he has now missed three of his 16 spot-kicks in all competitions in 2026.
"I spoke before that we reached good levels at the World Cup but didn't quite put a full 90 minutes together," Kane told ITV Sport.
"Probably similar again. We had a couple of good moments though; that period was as good as we've played in a long, long time, and that's the standard we know we can reach.
"We're playing against the world champions, the European champions, and we went toe-to-toe. On another day, for sure, we'd have won that game.
"We have to take the positives from it. We have to dust ourselves down and go again in a few days."
