Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has explained his decision to leave Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench during Sunday’s 2-1 win over Norway, insisting that the veteran forward’s status did not influence his team selection.
The decision came as a surprise, particularly because Jesus had initially told Ronaldo that he would play in the UEFA Nations League clash. Ronaldo had started Portugal’s previous game against Wales, but was left out of the starting XI against Norway despite being the national team captain and its all-time leading goalscorer.
Jesus, who previously worked with Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, said his decision was based purely on what he believed the team needed for that particular match.
“Before the match, I told him I was going to play him, but I didn’t. It’s football that dictates things,” Jesus said after the victory (via AS Quinas).
“He was ready to play, but it wasn’t his moment. I needed a player with different characteristics.
“I was thinking of bringing him on at the hour mark, but it wasn’t the right time given the flow of the match. Maybe he’ll play against Denmark.”
Jesus was also questioned about Ronaldo appearing to head straight down the tunnel after the final whistle without greeting the supporters.
The Portugal boss admitted that he did not know why Ronaldo had chosen not to acknowledge the fans, but said he would speak to his captain about the incident.
“He didn’t greet the fans? I’m going to talk to him. The national team is the national team. I couldn’t explain why he didn’t do it,” Jesus said.
The decision to leave Ronaldo on the bench could prove significant as Jesus begins putting his own stamp on the Portugal side following his appointment as Roberto Martinez’s successor.
Ronaldo remains one of the most important figures in Portuguese football, but Jesus’ comments make it clear that his reputation, captaincy and remarkable goalscoring record will not automatically guarantee him a place in the starting XI.
Portugal will now turn their attention to Denmark, with Jesus suggesting that Ronaldo could return to the starting lineup. However, his decision against Norway is particularly notable given that he had told Ronaldo before the match that he would play, only to ultimately leave him on the bench.
