Dallas Stadium in Texas hosted one of the most anticipated matches of the opening round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, as the Netherlands faced Japan in Group F. After a fiercely contested encounter, the two sides shared the spoils in a 2–2 draw.
With the teams closely matched in quality, the first half developed into a balanced battle with few clear-cut opportunities. The Netherlands enjoyed slightly more possession, but several promising chances were denied by an excellent Zion Suzuki performance in goal. Japan also threatened late in the half but could not find a breakthrough.
The match came to life after the restart. The Dutch opened the scoring in the 51st minute when Ryan Gravenberch delivered a pinpoint cross for Virgil van Dijk, whose powerful header found the net to give the Oranje the lead. Japan responded quickly, with Keito Nakamura leveling the score just six minutes later with a well-taken strike.

The Netherlands regained their advantage in the 64th minute through Crysencio Summerville, who produced a moment of individual brilliance before firing home with his left foot. Ronald Koeman’s side appeared to be in control thereafter, dictating possession and limiting Japan’s attacking threat for long stretches of the second half.
However, just as the Dutch looked set to claim all three points, Daichi Kamada struck in the 89th minute, rising highest to head home a dramatic equalizer and secure a valuable point for Japan.
Sweden and Tunisia are the other teams competing alongside the Netherlands and Japan in Group F of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
