James Rodríguez has returned to Colombian football after 19 years, joining Atlético Nacional at the age of 35. The move marks a highly anticipated return for one of the most recognizable Colombian footballers of his generation.
James began his professional career with Envigado before moving to Argentina, where he played for Banfield. His performances then took him to Europe, with spells at Porto, Monaco and Real Madrid, where he established himself on the biggest stage.
He later spent two seasons on loan at Bayern Munich, winning back-to-back Bundesliga titles, before joining Everton in the Premier League. His career then continued with Al-Rayyan in Qatar, Olympiacos in Greece, São Paulo in Brazil, Rayo Vallecano in Spain, León in Mexico and, most recently, Minnesota United in MLS.
His international career has been even more iconic. James became a global star at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he won the Golden Boot after scoring six goals. He has remained one of Colombia’s most important players for more than a decade.
Now, James is back in Colombia, joining Atlético Nacional and beginning a new chapter in his career.
Atlético Nacional welcomed him with a message to its supporters:
