James Rodríguez has officially called time on his Colombia career, announcing his retirement from international football on Tuesday. At 35, the Colombian star brings the curtain down on more than a decade of representing Los Cafeteros.
Rodríguez leaves behind a lasting legacy, with his extraordinary run at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil standing above the rest. The former Real Madrid midfielder now closes one of the most memorable chapters of his career, walking away from the international stage with his head held high after years of dedicated service to his country.
The announcement came through an emotional message shared with Colombian supporters on social media.
“The moment has come. Thank you for every match, every joy, every tear, and every dream we shared together. Representing the Colombian national team was one of the greatest honours of my life. Thank you, Colombia, and forever.”
Rodríguez finished his international career with 131 appearances for Colombia, scoring 31 goals and providing 43 assists. He represented his country at three World Cups — 2014, 2018 and 2026 — recording six goals and four assists across those tournaments.
Brazil 2014 remains the defining chapter of his international career. Rodríguez won the Golden Boot after scoring six goals and was also awarded the tournament’s Goal of the Tournament for his unforgettable volley against Uruguay in the round of 16. He inspired Colombia to their first-ever World Cup quarter-final before their historic run was ended by hosts Brazil.
His influence was just as significant at the Copa América. Rodríguez helped Colombia reach the final in 2024 and finish third in 2016. Across 14 appearances in the competition, he registered one goal and eight assists, further cementing his status as one of the most influential players in the history of Colombian football.
