Germany have been dealt a major setback after defender Nico Schlotterbeck was ruled out of the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to injury suffered in the match against Ivory Coast.
According to German newspaper Bild, the 26-year-old sustained a torn ligament in his left ankle during Germany’s 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast. Medical examinations later confirmed the severity of the injury, with Schlotterbeck expected to be sidelined for at least eight weeks.
The injury brings an early end to his World Cup campaign, meaning he will no longer be available to help Germany in the tournament.
The news is a significant blow to head coach Julian Nagelsmann, who has lost one of his most important defensive players while Germany remain in contention at the World Cup.
In a report titled "Bitter Diagnosis for Schlotterbeck," Bild stated that medical examinations confirmed the Borussia Dortmund defender's World Cup is over. His absence leaves Germany facing a difficult challenge as they continue their quest for international glory.
