At the NewYork/NewJersey stadium, hosting a Round of 16 clash at the FIFA World Cup 2026, Norway produced one of the biggest shocks of the tournament by defeating Brazil 2–1 and eliminating the five-time world champions.
The match began dramatically when Norway thought they had taken the lead in the 3rd minute. Patrick Berg finished a move involving Alexander Sørloth, but the assistant referee ruled Sørloth offside, and the goal was disallowed before Brazil could even react. In the 14th minute, Brazil were awarded a penalty after a VAR review confirmed a foul by Kristoffer Ajer on Matheus Cunha. Bruno Guimarães stepped up, but Ørjan Nyland produced a crucial save to keep the score level.
Brazil responded with sustained pressure. Gabriel Martinelli delivered a dangerous cross in the 30th minute that flashed across the Norwegian goalmouth without a finishing touch. Vinícius Júnior came close in the 40th minute, but Nyland again denied him. Just before halftime, Alisson Becker kept Brazil alive with a key one-on-one save against Martin Ødegaard, sending the teams into the break goalless.

In the second half, substitute Endrick missed a golden opportunity in the 59th minute, firing wide in a one-on-one situation. Despite Brazil’s attacking dominance, Nyland and Norway’s defensive structure held firm.
The breakthrough finally came in the 80th minute when Erling Haaland rose to meet a cross from Andreas Schjelderup, powering a header into the net. As Brazil pushed forward desperately in search of an equalizer, Norway struck again in the 90th minute, with Haaland sealing the victory with a clinical finish.
At 90+10 minutes, Neymar converted from the penalty spot to pull one goal back, but it was not enough to prevent defeat.
The result sent shockwaves through the tournament, ending Brazil’s campaign in painful fashion. Norway now advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of Mexico vs. England in Miami on 12th July.
