Anthony Gordon admitted that he was ‘gutted’ about England football team’s mistakes against world champions Spain football which helped them to a 3-2 victory over the Three Lions in a Nations League contest at Wembley.
Marc Guehi was caught in possession inside his own half with less than two minutes played allowing Lamine Yamal to put the visitors ahead before Nico O’Reilly gave the ball away with poorly aimed pass back into his own penalty area as Alex Baena scored Spain’s second goal to level the match at 2-2 after England had overcome the deficit.
Despite going behind so early England fought the get themselves back into the match with goals from Gordon and captain Harry Kane who also missed the opportunity to add a third after he missed a penalty in the second half.
Gordon spoke to ITV after the final whistle and reflected on the game saying England were hungry to win the game and have proven they are a ‘top team’.
“I think it is a bit of a missed chance. I thought it was a great game to watch and to play in,” Gordon said. “Some of the attacking play was at the highest level but I think in a game like that where mistakes cost you, you always feel it’s you giving it away rather than them winning it. They were as good as us, we were as good as them, just gutted about the mistakes.”
When asked if Kane’s missed penalty kick could have swung the match in England’s favour, Gordon admitted that it might have.
“I think it puts us in a great position to go on and get more,” he added. “We were hungry for more, come out to go for throat, for the kill and we did that. Penalties happen, he never really misses them, so we’ll let him off with that one.
“I don’t think there is a gap [to the best teams]. I feel like we’re right there, we can win that game so easily. If the penalty goes in, I feel like we go on and win the game. I thought you’ve seen tonight we’re a top team.”
