France’s roar wasn’t loud enough; Italy were smart enough to leave Paris with a point

France and Italy drew 1-1 at the Stade de France, with Michael Olise opening the scoring before Alessandro Bastoni equalised for Italy.

France and Italy played out a 1-1 draw in a highly competitive UEFA Nations League clash at the Stade de France on Friday night.

Italy created the first clear opportunity of the match in the ninth minute when Moise Kean found himself in a dangerous position inside the six-yard box, but France goalkeeper Mike Maignan made an excellent save to deny him.

France dominated possession for much of the first half, but Italy's compact and well-organised defence made it difficult for the hosts to create clear-cut chances. Italy came close again in the 41st minute when Davide Frattesi's effort from inside the penalty area took a deflection off a French defender and went narrowly wide.

France started the second half with greater attacking intent. In the 48th minute, Gianluigi Donnarumma produced two saves in quick succession, first denying a powerful effort from Désiré Doué before reacting brilliantly to keep out Ousmane Dembélé's close-range attempt.

Two minutes later, Donnarumma was called into action again as he made an impressive save to deny Michael Olise.

The Italy goalkeeper's resistance finally ended in the 55th minute. Ryan Cherki created the opportunity from a free-kick, and Olise produced a superb finish into the top corner to give France the lead.

Italy responded in the 68th minute after a mistake in the French defence gifted the ball to Alessandro Bastoni. The centre-back made no mistake in the one-on-one situation, calmly beating Maignan to level the score.

France almost restored their lead two minutes later, but Donnarumma turned Adrien Rabiot's low effort around the post.

The final 20 minutes were more evenly contested. France pushed for a winning goal, while Italy appeared increasingly focused on protecting the draw and securing a valuable point.

France were reduced to 10 men in the 85th minute when Dayot Upamecano received his second yellow card and was sent off. Italy were unable to take advantage of the numerical advantage, however, as the match ended 1-1.

The result leaves France top of Group 1 in League A with seven points. Italy remain third on four points, behind second-placed Belgium, who have six points.
