Flick reflects on Barcelona’s unbeaten start and squad competition

Hansi Flick discusses Barcelona’s 8 wins from 8 LaLiga games, Gordon’s first goal, Lamine’s fitness, Koundé’s return and the upcoming clash with Galatasaray.

Hansi Flick, FC Barcelona’s head coach, celebrated the victory over Getafe, which keeps his side firmly at the top of LaLiga for another week after winning all eight of their opening eight matches. The German coach praised his team’s response after nearly three weeks without competitive action due to the international break.

“I think scoring so early was very important today, especially after three weeks without playing and against a team like Getafe, who have one of the best defences in LaLiga. I really appreciate this win. We controlled the ball and our opponents well,” Flick told DAZN. “It’s not easy to create chances against them,” he added at the press conference.

Another source of pride for the Barcelona coach is the fierce competition within his squad and the level of performance all his players are delivering.

“It’s very important to keep all the players motivated. We have players performing at a very high level in the same position. That’s the best thing for the team, and I love it because, ultimately, it’s about the team, not an individual player or the coach,” the German explained.

Flick singled out Gordon, who scored his first goal in a Barcelona shirt to open the scoring.

“I’m very happy. He scored and has gained confidence with England, so I’m pleased with him. He brings a lot to the team. He has pace, can control the ball, presses well, and with his speed and dribbling, he’s always creating chances.”

Regarding Gabriel Jesus, another of the afternoon’s goalscorers, the German coach praised his hard work. “He’s different from Raphinha, but I’m happy with the way he played.”

As for Lamine, who completed the full 90 minutes, Flick admitted that he had asked the youngster whether he wanted to be substituted.

“I asked him, but he said no. In the second half, he was more involved, particularly in one-on-one situations. I’m happy with him. He’s receiving treatment and recovering well, and for a professional player, that’s the most important thing,” Flick noted.

Another player Flick was asked about was Koundé, who returned to action after spending three consecutive matches on the bench.

“He’s a professional. He always trains to improve and perform better. The team helps him a lot. We always think about the team, and everyone has to understand that they might have to start on the bench because we have a squad full of quality. That’s very important if you want to win trophies, and there’s a great atmosphere in the dressing room. I really value that,” he stressed.

Asked about Barcelona matching the best start to a league season in the club’s history, the German coach said: “The most important thing is to focus on the next game, against Galatasaray. We want to make history, but what matters most is that the players are fully committed,” he said.

Flick was also asked specifically about Gerard Martín, who reached 100 appearances for Barcelona in Saturday’s match against Getafe.

“Gerard has a great mentality. He trains well and always wants to improve. We help him develop, and he continues to grow. He’s fantastic.”
