FC Cincinnati reportedly enter preliminary discussions for Brazil star Neymar

FC Cincinnati have reportedly opened preliminary talks with Neymar over a potential move to Major League Soccer, as the club assesses the feasibility of signing the Brazilian star.

FC Cincinnati have entered preliminary discussions with Neymar around a move to Major League Soccer, according to The Athletic. The club is weighing whether a move for the Brazilian star makes sense, and has gauged his potential interest in such a switch. Neymar is under contract until the end of the 2026 season after penning a one-year extension with Santos.

Another MLS pursuit?

Neymar was close to an MLS move in 2025, when he was engaged in serious discussions with the Chicago Fire after leaving Al Hilal. However, he opted to sign with Santos, his boyhood club, which he helped save from relegation. He signed a one-year deal with the Brazilian club that cooled rumors of an MLS move before the World Cup.

Talks back on?

However, it seems there could be movement again. Although the reported talks are preliminary, Cincinnati are considering what a move for the Brazilian superstar would look like. The club declined to comment when contacted by GOAL.

The logistical questions for FC Cincinnati

There is a potential obstacle regarding roster construction. Cincinnati already have three Designated Player spots filled by Evander, Kevin Denkey, and Miles Robinson, all on long-term contracts. Unless something changes, Neymar would need to agree to a deal within MLS salary rules. The Athletic also reported that European clubs showed interest in signing Denkey last offseason.

Putting the club on the map

Cincinnati have recently explored moves for European stars. Denkey was the top scorer in the Belgian league when they signed him for $16 million ahead of the 2025 season. The club was also reportedly close to signing Weston McKennie and held talks with Josh Sargent.

Neymar is hoping to be part of Brazil’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, though he was not selected for the national team's friendlies in March.
