England secured a 2-1 comeback victory over DR Congo at Atlanta Stadium in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Harry Kane scoring a decisive brace to send the Three Lions into the quarter-finals.
DR Congo stunned England with an early opener in the seventh minute. Chancel Mbemba picked out Bryan Cipenga with a well-weighted pass, and the forward finished past Jordan Pickford to give the Leopards the lead.
England pushed for an equaliser before the break but were repeatedly denied. In the 30th minute, Lionel Mpasi produced an excellent save to keep out Jude Bellingham's powerful header, while five minutes later a goal-line clearance prevented Marcus Rashford from scoring from close range. DR Congo also came close to doubling their advantage before half-time, but Yoane Wissa struck the woodwork.

The Three Lions started the second half on the front foot, with Bellingham again forcing a save from Mpasi. Their pressure finally paid off when Anthony Gordon delivered a cross that Kane headed home to level the score.
Kane then completed England's comeback in the 86th minute, firing home a powerful strike to seal his second goal of the match and spare Thomas Tuchel's side from a shock elimination.
With the victory, England advance to face hosts Mexico in the quarter-finals, with the match scheduled to be played in Mexico City on 5th July.
