Edin Džeko will return to the Bundesliga for the 23rd season of his professional career after agreeing to remain with FC Schalke 04 for the upcoming campaign. Following an impressive second half of the season with the Royal Blues, the Bosnia and Herzegovina captain has signed a new one-year contract with the club.
Džeko will join his teammates for training on Tuesday (4/8). The striker represented Bosnia and Herzegovina at his second FIFA World Cup this summer, having previously appeared at the tournament in 2014.
After arriving from Fiorentina in January, Edin Džeko played a decisive role in Schalke’s promotion back to the Bundesliga. The experienced forward contributed six goals and three assists in 11 appearances, helping the club secure its return to Germany’s top flight.
“Edin brought something special to Schalke 04 during his first four and a half months at the club. He was a key player and a fan favourite, while his personality meant he always set an example both on and off the pitch. Our conversations over the past few weeks made it clear that Edin is still as hungry as ever. We therefore believe that he can help us in the Bundesliga too. Edin is staying at Schalke, which is fantastic news,” said Youri Mulder, director of professional football at FC Schalke 04.
“Since arriving at Schalke in the winter, I have been part of a fantastic team and experienced the incredible support of the fans. Winning promotion to the Bundesliga ranks among the highlights of my career. It was unbelievable. Football has made me happy and driven me throughout my life. I am still hungry, and I want to help our team in the Bundesliga too,” said Edin Džeko, who will continue to wear the number 10 shirt for Schalke.
