Atlético Madrid celebrated a landmark win on Wednesday, defeating Barcelona 2–0 away from home — their first triumph at the Camp Nou in 20 years. The result leaves the Madrid side in pole position to advance to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, a significant milestone for the club.
Speaking after the match, Simeone praised his team’s disciplined defensive performance and effective execution of their game plan.
“We defended in an orderly manner so that they could not progress,” Simeone said. “We didn’t create as many chances as we would have liked, but the opportunity we were waiting for arrived. I was far from Cubarsí’s action, but VAR called the referee. Then came an incredible goal from Julián Álvarez. In the second half, we focused more on counter-attacks.”
Barcelona were left frustrated after not being awarded a penalty in the second half following a handball incident involving Marc Pubill. However, Simeone backed the officials’ decision.
“If I was far from Giuliano’s play, I was even further from the other one,” he explained. “If Pubill and the referee interpreted that the play had not started, it’s common sense within the game. We can analyze it in many ways, but that’s football.”
Despite holding a two-goal advantage, Simeone stressed that the tie is far from decided.
“We are facing a very strong opponent, and we have the humility to admit how good they are,” he said. “We will play with enthusiasm, with our supporters, and with full commitment. I prefer having the advantage, but after the 4–0 Copa del Rey match, we saw how they can respond at home. We expect a difficult and complex game.”
