The new German football season began, as it does every year, with the Super Cup, now known as the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup. In a highly anticipated Klassiker at Signal Iduna Park, Bayern Munich defeated Borussia Dortmund 2–1 to claim the trophy for the 12th time.
Bayern enjoyed the better of the opening half, registering five shots on target and taking the lead in the 28th minute. Nathaniel Brown produced a fine left-footed finish to put the visitors ahead.
Dortmund appeared to have found an equaliser late in the first half, but Ramy Bensebaini was ruled offside and the goal was immediately disallowed. Bayern then struck again just before the break. After Michael Olise broke through the heart of Dortmund’s defence, he calmly found the bottom corner with his left foot in the first minute of stoppage time to give Bayern a 2–0 lead.

Dortmund came out for the second half with renewed intensity, throwing numbers forward and putting Bayern’s defence and experienced goalkeeper Manuel Neuer under sustained pressure. Their efforts finally paid off in the 75th minute when Fábio Silva pulled one back for the hosts.
Dortmund’s task became even more difficult in the 90th minute when Bensebaini was shown a straight red card for a heavy challenge on Ismael Saibari. Despite their late efforts, Dortmund were unable to find a second goal and Bayern held on for victory.
The triumph means Bayern Munich have now won the German Super Cup 12 times, with six of those victories coming against Borussia Dortmund. The Bavarians therefore begin the new campaign by adding another piece of silverware to their collection, while Dortmund are left to reflect on a narrow defeat in front of their home supporters.
