The 2026 FIFA World Cup Group H campaign came to an end with Spain finishing top of the standings, while Cape Verde secured second place to book a historic spot in the knockout stage.
At Guadalajara Stadium, Spain defeated Uruguay 1-0 thanks to a 42nd-minute strike from Álex Baena. Although the effort appeared relatively harmless, experienced Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera made a costly mistake that allowed the ball to find the net. Needing at least a goal to stay alive, Uruguay struggled to create chances as Spain controlled possession and limited La Celeste's opportunities. Uruguay's frustration was compounded in stoppage time when Agustín Canobbio was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle in the fifth minute of added time.

Meanwhile, at Houston Stadium, Cape Verde played out a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia, a result that proved enough to secure qualification. The Blue Sharks once again delivered a disciplined performance and advanced to the Round of 16 after drawing all three of their group matches.

Spain topped Group H with seven points. Cape Verde finished second with three points from three draws despite not winning a match. Uruguay and Saudi Arabia ended their campaigns with two points each, finishing third and fourth respectively. In a remarkable statistical quirk, Spain were the only team in the group to record a victory.
