The knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup got underway immediately after the conclusion of the group phase, as Canada edged South Africa 1-0 in a dramatic Round of 32 encounter thanks to a stoppage-time winner.
Played at Los Angeles Stadium, the match featured the runners-up from Groups A and B, with both sides having advanced from the group stage on four points. Canada made the brighter start and controlled much of the first half, applying sustained pressure on the South African defense. Their best opportunity came in the 44th minute when Moïse Bombito and Tajon Buchanan both saw their efforts denied in quick succession by South Africa's resilient back line and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
The second half began at a more measured pace, but Canada gradually reasserted their dominance and continued to create the clearer chances. In the 65th minute, Tani Oluwaseyi was denied in a one-on-one situation by Williams, who produced an excellent save. The South African goalkeeper was at his best again in the 78th minute, keeping out Jonathan David's powerful close-range effort.
Just as the match appeared destined for extra time, Canada found the decisive breakthrough. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Stephen Eustáquio unleashed a superb strike into the corner of the net, securing a dramatic 1-0 victory and booking Canada's place in the next round.
Canada will now face the winner of the Netherlands vs. Morocco Round of 32 clash in Houston, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
