FC Barcelona and Manchester City have reached an agreement for the transfer of Rodri, who will join the club and sign a contract committing him to Barça until 30 June 2030.
Born in Madrid on 22 June 1996, the Spanish international midfielder is widely regarded as one of the best players in the world in his position. A highly intelligent defensive midfielder, Rodri stands out for his tactical awareness, composure in possession, ability to recover the ball and exceptional passing accuracy.
Rodri began his football development in the youth system of Atlético Madrid before completing his progression at Villarreal, where he made his debut in Spain’s top flight. His outstanding performances earned him a return to Atlético in 2018. Following an impressive season under Diego Simeone, Manchester City secured his services in 2019.
During his time at Manchester City, Rodri became a fundamental figure in the team’s success thanks to his consistency, ability to control the rhythm of matches and leadership on the pitch. He played a key role in the club’s historic achievements, including multiple Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League triumph in 2023, when he scored the decisive goal that secured Manchester City’s first European Cup.

At international level, Rodri has also been a crucial player for Spain. He was part of the team that won UEFA Euro 2024, a success that further confirmed his status among the world’s elite players and was followed by his Ballon d’Or victory later that year. More recently, he played an important role in Spain’s World Cup triumph alongside eight Barça players, earning the Golden Ball award as the tournament’s best player.
One of Rodri’s greatest qualities is his exceptional understanding of the game. His ability to anticipate opponents’ movements, regain possession and dictate play through precise distribution makes him one of the most complete midfielders in modern football. Despite his primarily defensive role, he is also capable of contributing in attack and scoring decisive goals.
Beyond his footballing ability, Rodri is recognised for his professionalism, humility and dedication, qualities that have made him a respected figure both on and off the pitch.
